You need to be able to ride a bike, but now previous expedience is necessary. A good level of fitness is required for 2 days in the saddle, with some hills to get over.
Day 1: Ride to Hay on Wye / 24 miles / 3 ½ - 4 ½ hrs / 600m
We’ll meet in Abergavenny where Joe (your male guide for the day), will give you your bike, then we’ll pack our clothes and kit into bags and strap them to our bikes, proper bikepacking style. Once we’re all comfortable with the bikes, we’ll head off on our journey to Hay on Wye. Today is a gradual climb up a picturesque forested valley, past the remote village of Llanthony on your way to Gospel Pass, the highest pass in Wales: on a clear day, the views seem to go on forever. Take it in before plummeting down into the literary town of Hay-on-Wye.
Day 2: Wellness day in Hay on Wye
Spend this day to restore, to slow down and to soak up the charming town of Hay on Wye. After breakfast, we begin the day feeling strong with a morning mat Pilates class: low impact and core strength building. You’ll then be guided through the immersive practice of Shinrin Yoku (Forest Bathing) in the woods. Meditation and mindlessness in nature. A chance to really stop. Unplug. This is a powerful practice to experience profound peace and deep connection to Mother Nature. After lunch, you’ll have a few free hours to wonder and explore the bookshops and bustling cafes before we finish the day with a slow and embodied yoga flow to stretch out tired limbs, and give form to what is ready to emerge.
*order of day subject to change depending on weather.
Day 2: The valley return / 32 miles / 4 - 5 hours / 435m
Back in the saddle and leaving Hay behind, we’ll skirt beneath the shadow of Lord Hereford’s Knob before quiet twisting lanes lead us to the lush River Usk valley. After a riverside picnic, the final stretch of our journey will see us take the quiet meandering tow path that follows the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal back to Abergavenny.

OTHER STUFF
Bring a set of clothes for your journey home. If you’re travelling by train, you can leave any stuff you don’t need with us.
Our bikepacking route is designed to blend the rewards of physical challenge, with space to discover the unexpected and time to appreciate the journey. The distances are modest and should allow us to take your time, follow the more scenic route and experience the places between the places. It’s more about the lazy lunch, taking in the view or finding a spot for a wild swim than it is about knocking out the miles.
This route is graded MODERATE, based on someone with a good level or cardiovascular fitness.
The route passes over the highest road in Wales, so expect a couple of long uphill (and downhill) sections, with occasional steep bits. As the distances are relatively modest, with good smooth road surfaces all the way. You can expect to spend 3-5 hours in the saddle each day.
Preparation
If you’re not a regular cyclist, get your body bike trip ready by commuting to work, or do some spin classes. It all helps.
