Expect some long gradual climbs, with the odd short steep sections, exposed, occasional gravel tracks and a couple of hike-a-bike sections.
Day 1: Summit and plummet / 24 miles / 3 ½ - 4 ½ hrs / 600m
We’ll meet in Abergavenny where we’ll give you your briefing, pack your kit into bags, strap them to your bike and set you off. Today is quite a relatively short day, but allows for a relaxed departure and time to explore Hay in the late afternoon. The route is certainly no slouch though, starting with a gradual climb up a picturesque forested valley, past the remote village of Llanthony on your way to Gospel Pass, the highest pass in Wales: on a clear day, the views seem to go on forever. Take it in before plummeting down into the literary town of Hay-on-Wye.
Day 2: Past the big peaks / 38.5 miles / 6 hrs / 830m
Today is a big day. Leaving Hay behind, you’ll follow quiet twisting lanes, leading you to the lush River Usk valley and into town for a lunch stop. As you leave Brecon, you start the long gradual – and bumpy at times – climb into the mountains. Once you reach the highest point of the day, surrounded by towering beacons, you then follow the Taf Trail down the valley, negotiating a cheeky hike-a-bike section, before picking up the cycle path all the way to Pontsticill.
Day 3: High gravel descent / 31 miles / 4 ½ hrs / 510m
Today is significantly more downhill than uphill, but, you start with a steady climb through the forest to the spectacular high pass before the long boneshaking gravel descent, with stunning views over the valley below leading you down to Talybont-on-Usk. Plenty of coffee and cake options available before you pick up the canal towpath into Crickhowell for a spot of lunch. From here quiet lanes, lead you around the back of Sugar Loaf Mountain and the final climb before dropping back into Abergavenny.

ARRIVING THE NIGHT BEFORE?
If you’re travelling far, why not take the pressure off and stay overnight in Abergavenny.
Remember, you will be carrying your kit with you and space on the bike is very limited, so stick to the kit list and pack light. You need less than you think. When packing, think light and packable. Avoid bulky fleece and denim, and go for merino wool, microfiber or cotton.

OTHER STUFF
Save time and bring you packed lunch with you for Day 1
Bring a set of clothes for your journey home. If you’re travelling by train, you can leave any stuff you don’t need with us.
Our routes are designed to blend the rewards of physical challenge, with space to discover the unexpected and time to appreciate the journey. The distances are not massive and should allow for you to take your time, follow the more scenic route and experience the places between the places. It’s as much about the lazy lunch, taking in the view or finding a spot for a wild swim as it is about knocking out the miles.
This route is graded DEMANDING, based on someone with a good level or cardiovascular fitness.
You can expect some persistent uphill sections, steep at times, passing over exposed moorland with some long sections of gravel tracks. The distance on Day 1 is quite short, but allows for a relax departure and time to explore Hay in the afternoon. Day 2 is a big day, with a long unpaved climb, but the rest of the day is relatively leisurely. Day 3 has alot of gravel, but is more downhill than uphill. You will be in the saddle for 3-6 hours a day.
Preparation
If you’re not a regular cyclist, get your body bike trip ready by commuting to work, or do some spin classes. It all helps.
