Expect a long gradual climb over the Preseli Hills, and then get ready for the many short punchy coastal climbs. A couple of short hike-a-bike sections and gravel tracks to negotiate also.
Day 1: Into the Preselis / 25 miles / 4 ½ hrs / 710m
Leaving Narberth, the route starts with a flowing downhill through Canaston Woods, weaving between joggers, dog walkers, and towering pines. Quiet woodland tracks follow the river before you roll back onto tarmac and begin the gradual pull toward the Preseli Hills.
A quick café stop in Maenclochog breaks up the climb, then it’s back onto gravel as the route heads into Pantmaenog Forest. The trees thin, the horizon opens, and soon you crest the Preselis for your first view of the Pembrokeshire coast, shimmering in the distance on a clear day.
A short hike-a-bike along the ridgeline, and from there the reward is immediate – an incredible, flowing descent that drops you into the heart of the Gwaun Valley – one of the most atmospheric corners of Wales – and a gentle roll into Newport, your home for the evening
Day 2: Coastbound / 33 miles / 4 ½ hrs / 770m
You leave Newport on a sharp climb back into the Gwaun Valley, a lush and sheltered glacial valley long lived-in and shaped by small farms and centuries of rural tradition. The route follows its quiet floor before a couple of short climbs land you into Fishguard for a quick coffee, then heads inland across rolling farmland and past lonely standing stones.
Soon you link with Pembrokeshire’s narrow, hedge-lined coastal lanes. The road rises and falls through Abercastle and Trefin, then onwards to Abereiddi Bay, where a short detour takes you to the Blue Lagoon – a striking blue-green pool carved from an old slate quarry and now a favourite spot for swimmers and cliff-jumpers.
Back on the bike, the final stretch carries you across open headland and into St Davids, the smallest city in the UK and your base for the night.
Day 3: Final glimpse of the sea / 30 miles / 4 hrs / 640m
Rolling out of St Davids, you slip onto quiet inland lanes before re-emerging on the coast to skirt the wide sweep of Newgale Sands. The route rises and dips through the steep folds around Nolton Haven, offering a last dose of sea air before turning inland for good.
From here, it’s a peaceful run along farm lanes toward Haverfordwest, where a short section of ring-road cycle path is unavoidable but quickly behind you. The final stretch threads through the wooded tracks of Slebech Park and Pickle Wood, tracing the estuary tributary before reconnecting with Caneston Woods and a final push on rolling gravel brings you back into Narberth.

Night 1 – We use either the charming and traditional Cnapan Guesthouse or the popular Castle Inn (our recommended spot for dinner). Both are situated in the heart of the bustling coastal town of Newport Pembs.
Night 2 – The Art House, a cosy and classic B&B, or the St Davids Cross Hotel. Both lovely and centrally located.
Expect no frills and rustic, but friendly campsites with the essentials you’d expect. Toilets, hot showers, firepits and always within walking distance from a good pub.
We provide 2 or 3 person tents, let us know what combination works for your group.
+ Less equipment to carry
+ Sleep in a proper bed
– Temporary pause from wilderness
– No marshmallows on the fire
+ Full nature experience
+ Evenings around a campfire
– More kit to carry
– Camping even if it rains
Food and drink are at your own expense. We can recommend our favourite pubs and cafes, but it’s entirely up to you where and when you eat.
B&B – Breakfast is included.
Camping – The rural locations of our campsites means there isn’t always a cafe close by for breakfast, so to make sure you have something in your belly before you set off, we provide Firepot porridge pouches which you simply add hot water to cook, along with tea and coffee making facilities.
Lunches can be sourced enroute, packed lunch or cafe stops.
You’ll always be within walking distance, or a short cycle, from a good pub. Sometimes, there is only one pub for miles around, so we can book you a table in advance to avoid disappointment.

Remember, you will be carrying your kit with you and space on the bike is very limited, so stick to the kit list and pack light. You need less than you think. When packing, think light and packable. Avoid bulky fleece and denim, and go for merino wool, microfiber or cotton.
Prior to your trip, we will send you a dry bag which all your kit will need to fit into. Any questions about what to bring can be discussed on the pre trip video call.

OTHER STUFF
Bring a set of clothes for your journey home. If you’re travelling by train, you can leave any stuff you don’t need with us.
Our routes are designed to blend the rewards of physical challenge, with space to discover the unexpected and time to appreciate the journey. The distances are not massive and should allow for you to take your time, follow the more scenic route and experience the places between the places. It’s as much about the lazy lunch, taking in the view or finding a spot for a wild swim as it is about knocking out the miles.
This route is graded MODERATE – CHALLENGING, based on someone with a good level or cardiovascular fitness.
You can expect some persistent uphill sections, steep at times, passing over exposed moorland with some short hike-a-bike sections and occasional gravel tracks. The coastal roads constantly rise and fall, with plenty of short, steep sections. You will be in the saddle for 4-5 hours a day.
If you’re not a regular cyclist, get your body bike trip ready by commuting to work, or do some spin classes. It all helps.
